Neurological diseases
Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease are becoming increasingly prevalent and have a major impact on both patients and their families. Within the MEMORY project, Locsense and the research group of Professor Elga de Vries at the Amsterdam UMC are collaborating to develop a solution that improves and accelerates the development of new Alzheimer’s therapeutics. This will be achieved by developing an in vitro brain platform that includes the blood-brain barrier. In vitro testing involves culturing cells outside the body in a laboratory environment. While the blood-brain barrier protects the brain from harmful substances, it can also have the undesired effect of limiting the transport of therapeutic compounds to the brain.
Combining 2D and 3D cell culture
Our in vitro model combines 2D cell culture of the blood-brain barrier with 3D brain cell culture, enabling the assessment of drug penetration into the brain. This innovative platform will make it possible to evaluate the efficacy of new therapeutics and identify potential side effects in a physiologically relevant setting.
Innovative testing platform
Within this project, Locsense will broaden it’s product portfolio with new sensing techniques to study neurological diseases. Recent advances in stem cell technology make it possible to test new Alzheimer’s treatments and therapeutic compounds using patient-derived cellular material. Sensitive detection technologies are essential for measuring and reporting treatment effects.
